Types of communications: Giving a handover

Nurses have to give each other information about their patients and about patient care. Handovers are also called ‘hand offs’ (in America). Nurses may give a handover during shift change-over. They explain to nurses on the next shift what care they have given to patients and what care they still need to have.

When patients are first admitted to a ward, nurses give information about the patient’s medical history. They also explain what tests or procedures the patient has to have. For example, blood tests and operations.
